MAINE MADE

Bigelow Candy Company began as many cottage industries do-- in the home kitchen with young children in tow.  In the early 1990's, Donna Ivy Eames, taking time off from her career in fashion design to be at home with her three children and working evening in a restaurant, remembers a co-worker giving her a toffee recipe scribbled onto a piece of scrap paper.  Little did she know this would be the start of her candy business.  Her husband, Chip, was a veterinary sales rep at the time and shared Eames's candy to all of his accounts as holiday gifts.  Each year, his clients eagerly looked forward to the sweet buttery delicacy, as did family and friends. Ask Eames why she has continued to make toffee for over twenty years and the answer is simple:"to make people happy, that's the most important thing."  She fondly remembers her grandmother giving family and friends her fabulous homemade fudge packaged in decorated shoe boxes and the special pleasure it brought to her.  You could say candy making has surrounded Eames since childhood.  Realizing the interest in her candy had garnered, Eames decided to make her efforts more official.  She got her home kitchen state-licensed, bagan making her batches bulk, and sold her candy to local grocers.  Today the local following has grown immensely, driving the demand to expand her business.  Bigelow Candy Company's toffee is handmade from scratch in the Western Mountains of Maine.  Eames admits that the ingredients are sinful, but once you try it you will agree "it makes you happy"
